Eastview high school
Is texting hurting our generation? Tk, a student at Eastview said that “it’s not hurting our generation or benefitting it either, its changing it. Its reflecting on the type of society we live in”. Texting is also a bad habit. Many young teens are texting and driving and that is so dangerous. Many teens have died in accidents because of texting and driving. Many people could agree with what Tk had said but some people would disagree.
Texting is the new way of communicating and because so, many people are canceling their home phones. People are finding that they don’t need them and don’t use them anymore.
Some teachers have even started sending out mass texts to their students to send them reminders. This has helped many students drastically in remembering to study. Paige, a student at Eastview states that she loves how the teachers text her phone to remind her, “It actually works!”
Texting is also hurting our generation. If you were to walk through some of Eastview’s classes, you would notice that almost every student has their cell phone sitting out on top of their desks. This is bad because the student is only thinking about that text that they’re going to get instead of paying attention in class. This has caused many students to fall behind. Students are asked to put their cell phones away and some do, but also some do not. Many teachers are getting annoyed, and do not want to put up with it anymore.
Texting is also a boredom cure. “I text when I’m bored all the time, it makes time go by faster when your texting someone”, Paige stated. Students will text anyone to make the time go by faster and to not be bored. This has become a way of entertainment to some. Tk said that he texts because it’s fast and an easy way of communicating.
Some people are using “text language” so much that while they’re in class trying to write a paper they even sometimes slip up and write in “text language”. Texting is causing some people to forget the English language. The way people talk now is considered unacceptable to some people.
Texting is the “new age”. It is way faster and more convenient for most people. Many elderly have started buying cell phones and started using them. For them it is very hard to text but they try. Most of the Elderly end up just calling on the cell phone. Cell phones now-a-days have internet and music and a camera on them. This makes everything easier because they’re all combined. Your only carrying one thing instead of 4… computer, cell phone, camera, iPod/mp3 player, Making things a lot simpler.
But is this making us lazy? We’re starting to rely on things and this isn’t good because you never know when something’s going to break. When these things break they cost a lot of money to replace them. You don’t want to have to pay that extra money to replace something that you already spent a lot of money on.
“I wake up to texts all the time” Paige said when asked do you ever wake up to texts. Many students are losing their sleep because they just can’t get off their phones. Paige goes to bed at least an hour early because she lays in bed for an hour texting away. Some people will even stay up all night texting because it’s something to do. People are so addicted to texting that they can’t put their phone down. Maybe it’s not even texting, their just addicted to technology? Or facebook, twitter, formspring. Back in the day there was no such thing as facebook, twitter, or formspring. Or even cell phones for that matter. Our parents and their parents’ parents all lived just fine and dandy without cell phones and computer websites and all that jazz. We should all definitely be able to also. I think it would be great it for one whole week the whole world shut down and no one could use any technology. Just to see what people would do and how they would react. This would definitely be an interesting study.
Many people are spending a lot of money on texting and the cell phone in general. Paige stated that she sends and gets about 1000 texts all together in one day. If you don’t have unlimited texting you would be paying a lot of money for those texts. Another student, Tk said that he sends and receives about 400 all together in one day. He sends a lot less that Paige but if you really think about it, it’s still a lot!
Texting is interfering with our everyday lives. People have got into the habit of texting and driving. This is so dangerous and people can be killed. This is a huge distraction when driving and it makes it hard to concentrate on the road. Texting is also interfering by not paying attention to your parents, friends and family when they’re talking to you. You’ll be talking to your friend or whoever and you’ll get a text and you’ll grab your phone right away and start texting away… totally ignoring whoever your talking to because your texting and whoever your texting is way more important. This is very disrespectful and rude.
So is texting hurting our generation? I ask this question again only to remind you. I’ve explained my thoughts and reasoning about texting and everything about it. I would like to know what other people think about texting and the affect of it in our society. Is it destroying it or making it better? Some people think its changing for the better, but I bet other people would completely disagree.
